The fax machine and voicemail using the line after a number of rings you set, each of them has the ability to prevent the other from receiving calls. For example, if Voicemail is set to answer after two rings and the fax machine is set to answer after 4 rings, Voicemail will prevent the fax machine from receiving faxes. If you configure the device and voicemail to answer after the same number of rings, it will be impossible to predict which of the two will answer first. It is important to remember that neither Voicemail nor the fax machine can forward the call to the other after receiving it.

A great way to avoid problems such as the one mentioned above is to get a second phone number on your current line. A lot of people with Voicemail choose this option, which is called "special ring service," and declare themselves very satisfied. For details on this type of customer service, please see Special ringtone, Page 8-1. Another way to avoid a potential problem is to replace Voicemail with an answering machine. Your Brother fax machine is designed to work in tandem with an answering machine. (See Connecting an external telephone answering machine, page 2-10.)

When someone sends a fax, the machine beeps at 4-second intervals (CNG tones). You hear them when you dial the number and press Start Fax. These tones will sound for 60 seconds after dialing. During this period, the sending fax machine must begin the "make contact" procedure with the receiving device. Each time you use automatic procedures to send a fax, you send CNG tones over the telephone line. You will soon learn how to recognize these tones when answering a call on the device line, which will let you know that you are receiving a fax.

The receiving fax machine responds with receiving tones (strident sounds). A receiving fax machine sounds this signal on the telephone line for 60 seconds. The display shows Reception. If the machine is in FAX mode, it answers each call automatically with these tones. Even if the caller hangs up, the unit continues to beep for 60 seconds and the display shows Reception. To cancel the receive mode, press Stop/Exit.
